| 의과대학 시절 우리가 설레이는 젊은 가슴을 여미며 몇 번이고 읽어보았던 그 '히포크라테스의 선서'에 쓰여 있듯이, 의업은 질병으로부터 고통받는 이들을 어떤 조건에도 도와야 한다는 박애주의를 유구한 전통으로 해왔습니다. |
우리나라에서는 의술은 인술이라하여 세상을 구원(인술제세)하는 한 방법이었습니다.
그러나 근자에는 이러한 의업의 전통이 의료계의 안팎에서 점차 잊혀져 가고 있으며, 우리들 자신조차 의업의 순수성을 어디까지 지켜나갈 수 있을 것인지 회의를 느끼기 시작한지 오래입니다.
이러한 상황은 이렇다 할 대안 조차 제시할 수 없는 수 많은 사례들로 표출되고 있습니다.
그러나 의사들만이 고통을 겪고 있는 것은 아닙니다.
우리 사회는 국민 개개인의 건강권이 제대로 지켜 지지 못하고 있습니다. 이러한 상황에 직면하여 우리는 우리의 의사됨이 과연 무엇을 뜻하는지 새삼 생 각해 보아야겠습니다. 그것은 두말한 나위도 없이 국민들의 건강을 지키는 양심의 보루가 되는 것이야말로 우리의 소명이며 존재 이유입니다.
우리가 이 사회적 책임을 져버릴 수 없다는 소박한 믿음은 어느 의사 한 둘의 것이 아니라 모든 의사들이 마음속 깊이 나누어 가지는 것임이 분명합니다.
지금 우리 사회는 각 분야가 오랜 잠에서 깨어나 새로운 자각을 얻어가고 있습니다.
앞으로 수 년 사이에 일어날 사회와 의료계의 변화는 그 다음 수십 년을 지배하게 될 것입니다.
지금이야말로 국민들이 의료인의 양심의 소리를 필요로 하는 시기이며, 우리가 본래의 위치를 회복해야 할때 입니다. 이를 위하여 우선 우리가 의료문제를 대하는 데 있어 보다 넓은 시각과 객관적인 태도를 가지고, 국민들과의 진정한 만남을 시도하여야 할 것입니다.
이러한 취지를 이해하고 이에 동의한 의사들로 구성된 우리 '인도주의실천의사협의회'는 이제 창립 20주년을 맞아 사단법인 인도주의실천의사협의회로 다시한번 거듭나 이 사회와 국민들에게 도움이 되는 여러사업을 조직적이고 지속적으로 벌여나갈 것입니다.

About the Association of Physicians for Humanism
The Association of Physicians for Humanism is the most representative voluntary organization of doctors in Korea, pursuing humanism into action as doctors.
The association operates independently of all governmental organizations, institutions, political, economic, or religious influences, We are also independent of the Korean Medical Association.
The Association of Physicians for Humanism was founded in 1987 after the June Civil Movement, which was one of the biggest protest in the history of ROK. At first, we started as a small group of doctors who joined the signature campaign against the military dictatorship, as a part of the activity of the Civil Movement.
Our activities can be summarized into the advocacy of health as a human right; the activity for the alienated in the health area; research on the health status and health care system; and making counterproposals in health sectors. In these process, we finally aim at the actualization of humanism.
As years went by, many doctors became to sympathize with our spirit and activities. We have about 1,000 members as of Dec, 2000.
Especially, we emphasize on the solidarity and friendship with other NGOs whose goal and activity is not so far from ours. We have made many coalition activities with health and social movement organizations.
